A ministerial decision has granted a new extension on the validity of old police ID cards in Greece, extending them through September 25, 2027. However, as clarified, during this period (until September 2027) the use of old police ID cards will be subject to restrictions, as they will be accepted only for specific remote electronic identification procedures and not as general proof of identity or a travel documentdocument.
The ministerial decision, published in the Government Gazette B’ 5441/September 30, 2024, provides that old police ID cards may be used until September 25, 2027, in electronic identification procedures related to the issuance of trust service certificates.
The extension granted applies exclusively to cases where remote verification of information is required and does not mean that the old ID cards remain valid for all transactions.
The new extension applies to old police ID cards on which the full name is also written in Latin characters.
The old police ID card and its acceptance apply only to the specific electronic procedures provided for in the ministerial decision.
The extension provision includes identity cards for members of the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies, as well as residence permits for third-country nationals, provided they are valid.
The decision was made to address the delays that have arisen in the issuance of new ID cards, as many citizens have not yet completed the replacement process.
Permanent Phase-Out of Old ID Cards
The permanent phase-out of old ID cards from transactions with government agencies is expected to be completed in September 2027.
After that date, old ID cards will no longer be accepted by government agencies, and citizens will be required to have the new ID card.
To obtain the new police ID card, you must pay the applicable fees before visiting the police station.
The basic electronic fee is 10 euros and covers the cost of issuing, printing, personalizing, and securely transporting the new ID card.
For families with multiple children, a reduced fee of 5 euros applies upon presentation of the necessary supporting documents; a Greek Police stamp worth 0.50 euros is also required.
