Turkey carried out a new provocation on Friday morning (August 28), when a drone violated the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR) and Greek national airspace and flew relatively close to Alexandroupoli and the city’s airport, within the boundaries of the airport’s terminal areaairport.

The Air Force’s response was immediate, with a pair of Greek F-16s taking off to identify and intercept the Turkish UAV, which they did.

The flight of the Turkish drone coincided with the takeoff of a civilian flight from Alexandroupolis Airport.

There was no interference with the civilian flight, nor was there any safety risk.

The incident was continuously monitored by the relevant Greek authorities, who remain on high alert so that they can respond immediately to Ankara’s actions.

This latest Turkish provocation comes as Ankara escalates its rhetoric against Greece and the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and takes measures to prepare for any eventuality.

A telling sign of its intentions is that it recently published its own maps of its “parks” in the Aegean in an effort to create facts on the ground and challenge Greek sovereign rights in the AegeanAegean and the eastern Mediterranean, with its sights set on the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection project

A recent official document from the Ministry of Defense to the Turkish Grand National Assembly reveals that Ankara is developing crisis scenarios, tension, and even war in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Specifically, according to Nordic Monitor, the document dated August 10, 2026, signed by Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Güler, makes specific reference to Cyprus, as Ankara links developments in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, the strengthening of Greek-Israeli defense cooperation, and the security of the occupied territories to its own stance.
