The 53-year-old man in Rodopi confessed to the murder of his 44-year-old wife. A forensic examination of the body revealed that a single blow to the 44-year-old woman’s throat caused her death.
The suspect is currently hospitalized after attempting to take his own life following the murder of his wife. According to information from protothema.gr, the 53-year-old, after confessing to the crime, claimed that he lost control and attacked the 44-year-old in a fit of rage. Once he is discharged from the hospital, he is expected to be brought before the prosecutor. The couple’s children have also testified in the case.

He killed her with a 20-centimeter knife
The stab wound to the 44-year-old’s neck was deep, with the blade reaching and piercing her right lung, causing severe internal and external bleeding. According to the forensic examination, no other injuries were found on the body, and death is estimated to have occurred very quickly, within approximately 3 to 5 minutes of the stab wound. According to reports, the knife used was approximately 20 centimeters long.

The woman had decided to separate from her husband and had scheduled an appointment with her lawyer for today to proceed with the divorce proceedings; but the perpetrator took her life one day before the meeting.
Her lawyer spoke about the history of domestic violence the 44-year-old was reportedly experiencing, revealing that the 2022 incident was not the only one and that it had been preceded by other attacks by her husband. “The victim had been attacked by her husband on numerous occasions. It wasn’t just the one in 2022,” she noted, describing a history of violence that, according to her, had been ongoing for some time.

Eugenia Kolia’s attorney also addressed the reasons why a victim of domestic violence may find it difficult to leave an abusive relationship, highlighting the financial factor in particular.
“Victims often do not leave for financial reasons as well,” she noted, explaining that in the case of Eugenia Kolia, there was also the issue of a residence permit, since “income is a key criterion.” According to the attorney, behind the incidents of domestic violence lay the husband’s jealousy as well as the wife’s efforts to achieve financial independence. “His jealousy and her financial independence—which she had been striving to achieve all these years—were the causes of the domestic violence,” she stated.
Particularly shocking is her account of Eugenia Kolia’s son, who took her to the hospital. As she explained, the boy was in a state of shock and believed that his mother was still speaking to him during the drive. “While taking her to the hospital, the son, due to the shock, thought he was talking to his mother,” she said.
At the same time, she noted that there has already been interest in supporting the children. “Various organizations have contacted me to offer assistance to the children,” she said. Finally, the attorney asked that special care be taken when publishing images related to the case, with a view to protecting the children, and specifically that no photographs or footage of the family’s home be shown.
In the village of Dialambi, everyone speaks highly of the unfortunate 44-year-old. As they say, she was a hard worker who took care of her family. For this reason, she worked seasonally on islands during the summer months; this year, she was working on Thasos and had returned to celebrate her 16-year-old daughter’s birthday.
It appears that the 53-year-old man was taking medication and had previously been hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic; however, it was determined that he did not require further hospitalization. In 2022, the woman had reported him for domestic threats while they were in Crete, and although he was arrested, he was released. This was not the only time the perpetrator had used verbal abuse and exhibited violent behavior toward his wife, as it appears that other incidents occurred from time to time, which is why the 44-year-old woman wanted to divorce him.

On the other hand, a relative of the 53-year-old described him to protothema.gr as a “good man whom we never expected to do such a thing,” noting that they were aware of his arguments with the victim, but never expected him to take her life.
The murder took place at noon on Wednesday, when the 53-year-old stabbed the 44-year-old woman in the neck, while her 16-year-old daughter and their 19-year-old son were inside the house at the time. The teenager watched her mother die right before her eyes, while the 19-year-old was the one who carried her to the hospital to save as much time as possible. However, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Immediately after the heinous crime, the 53-year-old man attempted to take his own life.
