Margarita Papandreou has died at the age of 103. She was an author and the second wife of former Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou from 1951 to 1989.
She and Andreas Papandreou had four children: George, Sophia, Nikos, and Andrikos Papandreou.
Born on September 30, 1923, she would have turned 103 in a few days.
She founded the Union of Greek Women (EGE) and served as its president for eight years. She was actively involved in women’s issues and peace initiatives. She was also the author of numerous articles and books.
She was born in Oak Park, Illinois, USA, on September 30, 1923, the eldest of five sisters. She initially studied journalism and then earned her master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Minnesota, where she met her future husband, Andreas Papandreou, in 1947. They lived first in Minnesota and later in California, where Andreas Papandreou was chair of the Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and a close friend of the future governor of California, Pat Brown. They were married in a civil ceremony on August 30, 1951, in Reno.
