The 20-year-old man from Argos, who had been seriously injured during a police chase in the early hours of last Wednesday, died late Saturday night.
In their testimony before the investigating judge, the two police officers refuted the key elements of the charges, while emphasizing that they had no intention of killing him.
The 20-year-old was initially taken to Argos Hospital, then rushed to the Emergency Department at Thriassio Hospital, and subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at KAT Hospital.
Earlier on Saturday, the two police officers had been remanded in custody following their statements, and with the consent of the investigating judge and the prosecutor, they were taken to prison. The hearing process took several hours, and shortly after 8:30 p.m., it was announced that the two police officers would be taken to Korydallos Prison.
What they claimed in their statements
According to information from ERT, in their statements before the investigating judge, the two police officers refuted the key elements of the charges, while emphasizing that they had no intention of killing anyone. At the same time, they disputed the possibility of intent and maintained that they fired the shots to intimidate.
The defendants described what happened during the final stage of the chase. “The suspect tried to run us over with his car at least twice, and he caused damage to police vehicles. We were on different levels and were driving. Our shots were warning shots, intended to intimidate him and force him to stop so we could apprehend him. Under no circumstances did we aim at the suspect with the intention of injuring him. We were both running.”
What the 20-year-old’s mother said
The 20-year-old’s mother stated that her son is autistic with an 89% disability rating and has difficulty communicating. She claimed that he took the car without her knowledge while she was asleep and went to take a shower. She speculates that when the police officers signaled him to stop, he panicked because he had left his driver’s license at home, and did not stop.
