A shocking case that raises serious questions has come to light in Serres, when a family that went to claim the remains of a relative discovered that the body presented to them did not belong to their loved one.

According to information from ERT, the relatives were notified to claim the deceased, but they were confronted with an unprecedented situation, as they were handed the body of another man, a Muslim, who had also died in Serres.

The deceased’s daughter, when taken to the morgue for identification, immediately realized the mistake and, in a state of shock, stated that the man they showed her was not her father. She then notified the police and filed a complaint.

Meanwhile, the family’s attorney is expected to ask the prosecutor for permission to exhume a body that was buried in a Muslim cemetery in Xanthi, as there are serious indications and suspicions that it is their loved one.

Following the incident, the hospital administration ordered an urgent Administrative Inquiry (ED) in order to investigate the circumstances under which the mistaken handover of the remains occurred and to assign responsibility where appropriate.
