Fire in Derveni: A man's body was found in the forest; a woman was rescued

The fire that broke out in the area north of the village of Anthoupoli in the Municipality of Mygdonia, in Oreokastro, Thessaloniki, as the body of a man was found in the burned area, while a woman with burns was rescued.

The fire front approached the first houses of the settlement, and a 112 alert was sent to residents of the Derveni area to remain on alert.

Firefighting forces operating in Derveni, Thessaloniki, have been significantly reinforced after a fire broke out at 2:30 p.m. in an area with sparse vegetation. Strong winds are currently blowing, which is hampering the firefighting efforts.

According to the Fire Department, there are 39 firefighters in the area, along with a foot patrol team from the 2nd EMODE unit and 11 fire trucks, while volunteers are assisting in their efforts. Two firefighting helicopters and three aircraft are conducting aerial water drops. At the same time, water tankers from the Region of Central Macedonia are reinforcing the operation.

The fire front is moving toward the village of Liti. Civil Protection sent an alert via 112 to residents, instructing them to evacuate to the local sports field.

Throughout the operation, the Unified Operations and Crisis Management Coordination Center (ESKEDIK) has been monitoring the fire’s progress in real time, receiving continuous footage from a drone equipped with visual and thermal cameras.

Update from the Fire Department

At 2:30 p.m. today, June 30, 2026, a fire broke out in low vegetation in Derveni, in the Municipality of Oreokastro, Thessaloniki, and spread to a forested area.

115 firefighters, along with 3 forest firefighting teams, 36 vehicles, and volunteers, are on the scene. Ten aircraft and three helicopters have been deployed for aerial firefighting and are operating periodically.

Two alerts were issued by 112. The first at 3:40 p.m. informed residents about the fire in the area, and the second at 4:40 instructing residents to evacuate the village of Liti to the local sports field.

Unfortunately, while fighting the fire, firefighters discovered the body of a man inside a forested area on the outskirts of the village of Liti.

Firefighters rescued a woman with burns from the exterior of a home, transported her to a safe location, and she was taken into the care of an EKAB ambulance.

EKAV and Greek Police units have been deployed around the entire perimeter of the fire.

The area currently has a high fire risk, classified as Category 3.
