Severe weather sweeps through Greece: Roads turned into “rivers,” damage, and power outages

Severe weather conditions are affecting parts of the country
ALPHANEWSLIVE

A severe weather system has been affecting several regions of Greece since yesterday evening, with intense weather phenomena causing problems and property damage.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms, combined with gusty winds in some areas, have created difficult conditions, while the relevant authorities remain on high alert to respond to any new incidents.

In Skiathos, the heavy rainfall caused flooding, with main streets turning into torrents within a short time. The rushing waters swept away objects and store equipment, while power outages and water ingress into buildings were reported.

At the same time, strong winds caused serious problems in the Parga area, where a tornado damaged power infrastructure and homes. Cables and utility poles were damaged, leaving several communities without power.

The severe weather was not limited to these specific areas, as heavy rains and thunderstorms affected parts of the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Euboea, and the Sporades.

Skiathos Flooded

The severe storm caused chaos overnight in Skiathos. The waterfront was flooded, with streets filled with water, and even tables from shops were swept away. The storm also caused power outages in several areas of the island.

The data on the intensity of the rain is particularly striking. According to local and meteorological records, Skiathos recorded over 130 millimeters of rain in about an hour, while the local weather station recorded an instantaneous rainfall rate that reached 281 millimeters per hour. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) had issued a warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, possible hail, and gale-force winds of up to 7–8 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

A road in Euboea was cut in two

The severe weather has also caused serious problems in several areas of Central and Northern Euboea this evening.

Flooding, landslides, and road closures have been reported, with the most severe problems occurring in the Triada area of the Dirfys–Messapia Municipality.

The massive volume of water caused problems on main roads, while yards were flooded and water seeped into some homes. Significant damage has also been reported to crops in the area.

The road to Northern Euboea is closed due to landslides

The connection to Northern Euboea has also been severely affected, as the road has been closed in both directions at Derveni due to landslides.

The Deputy Regional Governor of Euboea, George Kelaitidis, reported that traffic has been halted due to the problems caused by the landslides, with crews on standby to restore access.

Authorities remain on high alert, as severe weather conditions continue and there is a risk of further problems in areas where flooding and landslides have already occurred.

Problems in Parga as Well

Significant problems had already been reported since the previous night in the Fanari area of Parga. There, a powerful tornado caused damage to the power grid, ripping out cables and toppling a utility pole, leaving at least eight villages without power. In Mesopotamos, strong winds caused damage to residential roofs, as roof tiles were blown off.

The storm began in Parga on Friday, September 25, and continued through the weekend, with Civil Protection in Epirus on high alert.

The picture emerging is one of a wave of severe weather with varying impacts across different regions: from flooding and road problems on Skiathos to damage caused by strong winds and power outages in Parga. The weather events are still unfolding, and the coming hours are considered critical for assessing the total damage.
