Today (August 7), the 55-year-old man from Mystras is expected to appear in court at the Sparta Courthouse, who is accused of hiding the remains of his 90-year-old father in a freezer at the hotel he owned for more than two years in order to continue collecting his father’s pension.
The case came to light on Tuesday, August 4, and has sent shockwaves, with authorities now attempting to provide answers regarding both the exact circumstances and time of the elderly man’s death, as well as the events that followed.
The 55-year-old has admitted to authorities that he placed his father’s body in the freezer and kept it there for more than two years in order to continue receiving his father’s pension.
The focus is now on his defense and the explanations he will provide for his decision to conceal his father’s death and keep his remains inside the hotel.
“He loved his parents to the point of obsession”
The 55-year-old’s defense attorney, Agis Kokkoros, according to the Greek channel Mega, attributed his client’s behavior to psychological factors, arguing that he had an “obsessive love” for his parents.
“This pathological love of his explains a great deal,” the defense attorney said, noting that the 55-year-old is now beginning to realize the gravity of his actions. “He is now beginning to realize the reprehensibility of his act—namely, that he should have given his father a proper burial,” he added.
According to reports, the 55-year-old allegedly received, in addition to his deceased father’s pension, that of his mother, who had also passed away.
Autopsy and toxicology tests ordered for the 90-year-old’s death
Meanwhile, the results of the forensic examination of the 90-year-old’s remains are considered crucial to the progress of the case. Hellenic Police officials handling the case are awaiting the findings in order to form a clearer picture of the causes and circumstances of the elderly man’s death.
According to the information available so far, no visible injuries have been detected on the exterior of the body. However, all possibilities remain open until the autopsy is completed and the results of the toxicology tests are known.
The tests are expected to reveal whether the 90-year-old died of natural causes or if there is any other evidence that might lead authorities in a different direction.
