The Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, was elected President of the Rectors’ Conference.
Following the decision of the plenary session of the Rectors’ Conference held in Samos on July 2–3, 2026, Mr. Siassos became the youngest Rector ever elected at the Rectors’ Conference, while he has also been at the helm of Greece’s largest university since September 2023.
During his tenure at the University of Athens, Mr. Siassos has established significant partnerships with leading universities in Europe and the United States, and has seen a significant rise in all international university rankings. The University of Athens now ranks among the top 200 universities in the world, and the establishment of its branch in Cyprus marks a historic milestone—essentially the first branch of a Greek public university outside Greece.
The Who’s Who of Gerasimos Siasos
Gerasimos Siasos is a Professor of Cardiology and the youngest elected Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has served as a Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School (2015–2016), Dean of the Athens Medical School (2021–2023), Vice Dean of the Athens Medical School (2019–2021), and Dean of the “Aretaieio” and “Aiginiteio” University Hospitals (2019–2021).
He studied and was unanimously elected to all academic ranks at the Athens Medical School. He worked at the First University Cardiology Clinic (Hippocrates Hospital) and served as Head of the Atherosclerosis Unit and the Biochemistry, Immunology, and Molecular Biology Units at the same clinic. He spearheaded the establishment and operation of the Third University Cardiology Clinic at “Sotiria” Hospital, where he serves as Clinic Director. He is the founder and first Chair of the “Heart and Diabetes” Working Group of the Hellenic Society of Cardiology and Head of the Special Clinic “Heart and Diabetes” for the care of patients suffering from heart disease and diabetes. He participated in the design of the national cardiovascular disease prevention program, PROLAMVANO.
He has authored more than 500 publications in prestigious international scientific journals with a total Impact Factor > 3,000 and more than 30,000 citations (citations) in the international literature (h-index 72). His literary work includes editing and authoring 20 books and treatises on cardiology, and he has received significant honors and awards for his scientific and social contributions.
