Shocking testimonies: EKAB paramedics “lash out” at Gakas and Theodoropoulos over Mazonakis’s death

They refute the arguments of the two doctors

The inaction and unwillingness to cooperate displayed by Ioanna Gaka and Ilias Theodoropoulos are highlighted by the testimonies of the EKAB paramedics who arrived at the clinic on KarNeadou Street in Kolonaki after receiving a call about a patient in cardiac arrest.

As paramedic Leonidas Sidiropoulos vividly described to OREN regarding the events of the day Giorgos Mazonakis passed away, “the doctors did not provide us with any information—neither about the patient’s medical history nor whether he had any underlying conditions, nor whether he was taking any medication—all of which would have helped both our work and the work of the hospital to which he was being transported.”

“All they told us was that it was Giorgos Mazonakis, that he’d been there for 10 minutes, and that they hadn’t had time to do anything,” added the EKAB paramedic.

Responding to Ioanna Gaka’s claims that EKAΒ also bears responsibility for the 54-year-old singer’s death, the paramedic explained that “Getting a stretcher into an apartment is time-consuming and difficult. Taking 20 minutes isn’t good for the patient.”

“It took us 2 minutes and 40 seconds to get from the clinic to the ambulance. At the same time, with the chair we used, we can perform chest compressions, but they aren’t of the same quality as those performed on a stable stretcher,” Mr. Sidiropoulos added.

When Gakas and Theodoropoulos were asked if they had tried to resuscitate Giorgos Mazonakis, the paramedic said “The doctors told us that they performed chest compressions, that they used a defibrillator which didn’t work, and that they had administered 1 mg of epinephrine.”

“They only told us that he was taken in for treatment.”

For her part, the female paramedic who was part of the EKAV ambulance crew on the day that proved fatal for Giorgos Mazonakis stated in her testimony, according to OREN, “We went to the room where the patient was, and there we encountered a man who told us he was an internist at that clinic, performing CPR on the patient, who was lying on his back on a hospital bed. The patient was not breathing on his own, had no pulse, and was in a state of mydriasis.”

When asked the crucial question of what had happened, the paramedic testified that they received the following response: “The doctor told us that he had come in for a treatment without specifying what it was, and before it began—after an IV line had been inserted—he suffered a cardiac arrest.”

“When we entered the room, we were told they had a defibrillator but it wasn’t working, while the doctor—who told us he was an internist—didn’t express a desire to accompany us to the hospital,” the rescuer added.

“We didn’t know about plasmapheresis,”

When asked whether the paramedics were aware of the plasmapheresis procedure, the president of the EKAB employees’ union, Giorgos Mathiopoulos, answered in the negative.

“No, they didn’t know about it. The only thing a woman—probably the doctor—said was, ‘We didn’t put him on the machine; he wasn’t connected.’ My colleagues didn’t know which machine she was referring to,” he said.

“Unfortunately, they didn’t inform us about the medical procedures being performed in general, or tell us who the patient was and what had happened. We began the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedure as required, and since the singer did not regain consciousness, we transported him to “Elpis””
