An alarm went off a short while ago at "Diagoras" Airport in Rhodes when an Olympic Air aircraft that had taken off bound for Karpathos was forced to return after the captain reported a possible mechanical problem.
According to flight data recorded on Flightradar24, the aircraft was an ATR 42-600 (twin-engine turboprop), flight number OA94 (OAL094A) and registration number SX-OAZ, which was operating the Rhodes–Karpathos route.
After being notified by the crew, all prescribed safety procedures were immediately implemented at Rhodes Airport, with the mobilization of the airport’s Fire Department, the relevant aviation authorities, and the other involved teams.
The aircraft returned to Rhodes as scheduled and landed safely at Diagoras Airport, with no problems reported during the landing.
Technicians will conduct the scheduled inspection of the ATR 42-600 to determine the cause of the return flight. Depending on the results of the inspection, a decision will be made as to whether this particular aircraft will continue its flight to Karpathos or whether the passengers will be transported on another aircraft.
