Investigators from the Arson Crimes Investigation Unit (A.K.) investigators from the Thesprotia Investigative Unit for Combating Arson Crimes (A.K.A.E.E.) have moved forward with the case.
As reported by the Fire Department and as relayed by the Athens News Agency, according to the investigation’s findings, a local resident started the fire at approximately 2:27 p.m. by setting a pile of electrical cables on fire in order to strip them of their plastic casing. This action resulted in a fire breaking out near a forested area.
Following an immediate investigation of the case by investigators from the Thesprotia Regional Police Directorate, the perpetrator was arrested in the act and was fined 1,875 euros.
Over 100 arrests since the beginning of the year
It should be noted that, from January 1 through July 10, 2026, a total of 553 administrative fines have been imposed, amounting to 718,928.83 euros, while 177 arrests have been made under the summary proceedings; of these, 163 (92.09%) involved cases of negligence and 14 (7.91%) involved cases of intentional misconduct.
As emphasized by the Fire Department, the Arson Crimes Investigation Directorate (DAEE) and the Fire Department’s investigative units remain on high operational alert, conducting intensive inspections and taking immediate action to hold those responsible accountable whenever violations are detected.
Most fires
are caused by negligence. Finally, the Fire Department reminds the public that the overwhelming majority of fires continue to be caused by human negligence. “Adhering to fire safety measures and avoiding activities that could cause sparks or ignition are essential for protecting human life, the natural environment, and citizens’ property,” the Fire Department emphasizes.
