The body of a 60-year-old woman, who—according to information from the newspaper “Eleftheria”—was found in a mummified state in a basement apartment in Larissa. The tragic case was discovered by chance after the basement apartment in the Agios Konstantinos neighborhood on 28th of October Street was sold, and according to initial estimates, the woman’s death is believed to have occurred several months earlier. The body was discovered by officers from the Larissa Police Department on the morning of August 19, when they were called to open the locked apartment.
The 60-year-old woman was found dead on the floor, and next to her was a bag containing, among other things, a police ID; based on this, officers from the Larissa Police Station searched for possible relatives, and after collecting DNA samples, the laboratories of the Hellenic Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate will proceed with identifying the remains. The tests, following the shipment of samples yesterday, are expected to be completed in the coming days, and until then, the body will remain at the morgue.
However, based on the police ID found in her bag, she is a 60-year-old woman who is believed to be from Thessaloniki, and was found in Larissa after having previously lived in a European country, though details about her life remain unclear.
Due to a series of coincidences, the body of the 60-year-old woman was discovered by chance; her death—which, according to the medical examiner’s report, was due to natural causes—is estimated to have occurred at least a year ago, and for reasons currently under investigation by the Larissa Medical Examiner’s Office, the body, rather than being in a state of decomposition, was found in a state of mummification, a phenomenon recorded for the first time in local forensic history.
Furthermore, the fact that the body had not decomposed since death meant that it was not discovered earlier due to the absence of a foul odor.
Thus, the body was discovered by officers from the Larissa Police Station on the morning of August 19, when they were called to open the locked apartment, following its purchase and given that the apartment’s previous owner lives in another city.
In fact, due to a delay in the payment of some rent, the original owner of the apartment reportedly spoke with the deceased, asking her to vacate the apartment, thus creating the impression that the basement was empty and could be sold.
