An extremely serious allegation of a brutal attack against a woman in her 80s and her daughter, a short distance from Victoria Square, has come to light through the daughter’s personal account.
According to a post by journalist Christina Galanopoulou, the incident took place on Friday, September 11, around 8:30 p.m., at the intersection of Ellopias and Alcibiades Streets. She claims that five people attacked her and her mother, with the elderly woman sustaining the most serious injuries. The description of the attack is particularly brutal. The 80-year-old’s daughter reports that one of the assailants shoved her when she instinctively tried to protect her mother, while a second person allegedly punched the elderly woman in the face. Then, according to the complaint, he grabbed her by her shirt in an attempt to snatch her purse, which she was wearing across her body.
As her daughter alleges, when he was unable to take the purse, the assailant grabbed the elderly woman by a thin chain she was wearing around her neck and dragged her until it broke. The woman lost her balance and fell face-first onto the asphalt.
At the same time, as mentioned in the post, the rest of the group had formed a circle around the two women. “All I remember was my mother’s blood everywhere—on the pavement, on me, on her dress,” her daughter writes, describing the dramatic moments that followed. As she notes, she began calling for help from the very first moment, until neighbors gathered. Of particular significance is her account of the delay in providing emergency assistance. As she states, an EKAB ambulance never arrived at the scene, resulting in first aid being administered by two police officers and local residents. The elderly woman, who, according to her daughter, was unable to stand or even sit due to the condition she was in, was eventually transported by private car to Evangelismos Hospital. There, according to the same account, it was determined that she had suffered a broken nose, extensive bruising, and injuries to various parts of her body.
A short time later, two plainclothes police officers arrived at the hospital to proceed with the suspect identification process. According to the post, individuals considered suspects had already been located and arrested near the area.
Christina Galanopoulou also describes the psychological impact of the attack. She states that she is still in a state of shock and feels guilty because, despite her efforts, she was unable to protect her mother. “Every time I try to close my eyes, I see her blood spreading everywhere,” she says, explaining that even the slightest noise makes her jump in fright.
Particularly harrowing is her account of past conversations she had with her mother about the situation in the area. As she writes, her elderly mother often urged her to avoid groups of men on the street, while she would reply that “the street belongs to everyone.”
