Two Turkish nationals were arrested by officers from the Northern Greece Organized Crime Division, on charges of importing and trafficking illegal weapons from their home country to Greece, with the intent of supplying criminal groups.
The operation was organized following the analysis of intelligence indicating an imminent shipment of a large quantity of weapons via international freight trucks. Under these circumstances, a coordinated inspection operation was carried out in the Thrace region.
More specifically, on the evening of last Wednesday (July 1), police forces located two trucks that had entered Greek territory via a border crossing in Evros. Surveillance revealed that one of the vehicles was acting as a scout, checking the route for the possible presence of police officers.
When the second truck was stopped and inspected, a travel bag and a suitcase were found carefully hidden under the bed in the cab and behind the driver’s seat, a travel bag and a suitcase, inside of which were found 50 pistols and 49 magazines, hermetically sealed and lacking serial numbers—so-called “ghost” weapons. The weapons were confiscated, as was the truck used to transport them.
Charges were filed against the arrested individuals for participation in a criminal organization and violations of firearms laws, and they are being brought before the competent prosecuting authority.
According to the Hellenic Police, similar cases of arms trafficking have been recorded by the same agency in recent months, during which “ghost” weapons were discovered.
