Tragic events unfolded in Liti, Thessaloniki, where a devastating fire claimed the life of a 66-year-old man. Late Tuesday night, a second body was found inside the burned-out house, with authorities expressing fears that it may belong to his 12-year-old son, although the identification process has not yet been completed. The child’s 40-year-old mother was also seriously injured in the fire and was taken to the hospital with extensive burns, where she remains hospitalized.

The family’s home, located in a wooded area on the outskirts of the village, was completely destroyed, and images revealed at first light show the extent of the devastation.

Meanwhile, the fire department’s investigation of the house continues, led by the relevant teams.

The house was located in a wooded area on the outskirts of Liti, and the flames engulfed it in a matter of minutes.

The house is isolated, and there are only a few other homes in the area. Access, however, is not considered difficult, as there is a road leading to the village, which belongs to the municipality of Oreokastro, while Thessaloniki is 30–40 minutes away.

Firefighters initially found the 66-year-old man dead outside the house, while the 40-year-old mother was taken to Hippocrates Hospital with burns.

According to reports, the woman told rescuers that her child and her partner were still inside, prompting an immediate response from the authorities.

However, due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters were unable to approach the house, as their priority was to extinguish the blaze.

Once the fire was gradually brought under control and it became possible to search the residence, a second charred body was discovered late at night, which may belong to the 12-year-old child. Identification is now pending.

Due to the fire, residents received two consecutive messages from 112 instructing them to evacuate.

It remains unclear, however, why the two people were unable to evacuate in time, despite the warnings.

According to reports, the family’s large estate contained beehives and crops, and authorities are investigating the possibility that they attempted to save their property as the fire approached.

The exact circumstances under which they became trapped are expected to be clarified by the investigation conducted by the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, Konstantinos Moschovopoulos, the appointed Civil Protection advisor, described yesterday as a tragic day. “The fire escalated rapidly due to the conditions; we had adverse winds. All necessary measures were taken, yet a tragic incident occurred. My deepest condolences to the family.”

“We are devastated by the loss of these two people. The exact extent of the wildfire will be assessed in the coming days. What I wanted to emphasize, on behalf of the Forest Service, is that we had removed dead and diseased trees. “These efforts were crucial in preventing the fire from spreading,” said Filothei Mella, the forest ranger of Thessaloniki.
