Greece is at the mercy of severe weather, as rain and storms sweep through regions, causing dozens of problems.
The storm is battering Skiathos, where 112 emergency calls urged residents to limit their travel to only what is absolutely necessary.
Raging waters swept away parked vehicles and flooded stores. According to thenewspaper, the force of the water also tore up a section of the road’s paving.
However, there were also problems with the power supply, as parts of the island were left without electricity. Power outages also occurred in Skiathos.
According to skiathoslife, due to the adverse weather conditions, all schools in the Northern Sporades remain closed today, and no ferry services are operating, resulting in the suspension of maritime transportation to the islands.
Problems in Euboea Due to Bad Weather
Euboea is also at the mercy of the bad weather, where rains have caused damage to infrastructure and roads, according to evima.
Evima reports that the Kireas River overflowed, resulting in the suspension of traffic toward Chalkida on the main highway. The mayor of Mantoudi–Limni–Agia Anna, George Tsapourniotis, announced that due to the Kireas River overflowing, traffic heading toward Chalkida will be temporarily rerouted via Metochio–Dafnousa.
According to evima.gr, a temporary bridge collapsed in the Kyparissi area of Politika, at the “Pethamenos” location, in the Municipality of Dirfys-Messapia, due to severe weather.
Roads were also flooded in Attica
In Attica, the storm caused widespread flooding and road problems. The images from Perama are particularly striking.
Ship Departure Ban in Piraeus and Lavrio—Winds up to 10 Beaufort in the Aegean
A sailing ban is in effect from the ports of Piraeus and Lavrio until 3 p.m., due to strong winds blowing in many coastal areas of Greece and, according to the National Meteorological Service (EMY), reaching 9 Beaufort in some parts of the Aegean and temporarily 10 Beaufort.
According to the Coast Guard, the passenger-ferry “Blue Star Delos” departed as scheduled at 7:20 a.m. from the port of Piraeus, following its scheduled route to Paros, Naxos, Thira, and Ios.
In the Saronic Gulf, only certain routes are being operated by conventional passenger-car ferries, while hydrofoil services are not running.
In contrast, morning sailings from the port of Rafina are expected to operate as scheduled.
At the same time, ferry services on the Agia Marina–Nea Styra and Arkitsa–Aidipsos routes are suspended due to adverse weather conditions.
Passengers planning to travel today are advised to contact their local port authorities and travel agencies before departure to stay informed about any changes, delays, or changes to schedules.
Schools Closed in the Dodecanese and the Cyclades
The first wave of bad weather has already hit Rhodes and other islands in the Dodecanese and the Cyclades, with heavy rainfall beginning at 1 a.m., though no serious problems had been reported by 7:10 a.m.
Schools of all levels and daycare centers in the Dodecanese and the Cyclades remain closed today, Wednesday, October 14, following a decision by South Aegean Regional Governor George Hatzimarkos, due to the dangerous weather conditions affecting the region.
Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding on streets in the city and surrounding areas, some of which have turned into rivers. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution while driving and to avoid areas where water has pooled.
At the same time, there are reports of power outages in areas such as Sgourou and Koskinou, with repair crews on site to restore service.
The Fire Department, the Civil Protection agencies of the region and municipalities, as well as all relevant agencies, are on high alert to immediately address any problems arising from the development of these weather conditions.
The competent authorities recommend that citizens limit non-essential travel, as heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next few hours.
