It was around 1:00 a.m. when groups of patrons were eating and enjoying themselves at the tables outside a tsipouro bar on Agamemnon Street in Evosmos, Thessaloniki. It should be noted that the planters placed around the outdoor tables were what stopped the car in its tracks and saved the patrons, three of whom were injured.
A sobriety test conducted on the 45-year-old after the incident confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested and is expected to be brought before the appropriate judicial authorities.
“If it weren’t for the flower boxes, we’d be holding funerals”
“If it weren’t for the flower boxes, we’d be holding funerals,” said the store owner. She explained that she had left the store a few minutes earlier and returned immediately as soon as she was informed of the accident. “I was met with terror and panic; it was like watching a movie,” she said.
“The driver backed up and tried to drive away,” said a customer who was at the tavern with her husband, who is currently hospitalized following the accident. As she explained, the customers themselves, holding chairs, stopped the driver after the accident to ensure he remained at the scene.
Another witness, who was injured in the incident, told reporters that she feels lucky to have survived. “Thankfully, the planters were there; otherwise, we would all have been killed,” she noted. She described how panic broke out when the car crashed into the store and explained that she suffered injuries to her ribs and head.
