A 17-year-old is fighting for his life after collapsing in front of his horrified teachers and classmates in the schoolyard of his school in Pefkochori, Chalkidiki.
The 17-year-old is being treated in the Cardiovascular Unit of the Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki, intubated and suffering from severe cerebral edema; his condition is described as serious, as his hemodynamics have not yet stabilized, and he is expected to undergo further tests in the coming hours.
According to a post by KIDS SAVE LIVES – Children Save Lives, the incident occurred after 10:30 a.m., when the 17-year-old collapsed. School staff notified the National Ambulance Service (EKAV) and the private physician from Pefkochori, Konstantinos Lazaridis, who is also the vice president of KIDS SAVE LIVES.
According to the same source, the doctor arrived within about three minutes and determined that the student was not breathing and was in cardiac arrest. A defibrillator was used immediately; it detected a shockable rhythm, and the first defibrillation was administered, while cardiopulmonary resuscitation continued until the arrival of the ambulance.
During the resuscitation effort, the 17-year-old initially regained a heartbeat, but subsequently suffered another cardiac arrest. Resuscitation efforts continued inside the ambulance by EKAB paramedics and the doctor.
With the assistance of a Hellenic Police patrol car, which cleared the way, the student was transported to the Kassandria Health Center, while CPR and the use of a defibrillator continued en route.
According to KIDS SAVE LIVES, the resuscitation effort lasted a total of about 50 minutes—at the school, in the ambulance, and at the Health Center—during which a total of seven defibrillations were performed. The 17-year-old eventually regained a heartbeat and was transported to the Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki.
