The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) announces that, one year after it began operations, the Hatzigiannis Health Center in Akaki was the focus of an event held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, focusing on the Center’s progress, its contribution to the local community, and its next steps for development.

The Center’s operation marks an important step toward strengthening primary health care in the greater western Nicosia area, offering residents access to improved health services close to where they live.

The completion of its first year of operation is not only a milestone but also a starting point for the future of Primary Health Care. The focus is on further strengthening the Center, with the aim of responding even more effectively to residents’ needs and, where possible, the need for them to travel to Nicosia for services and tests that can be provided at the primary care level. At the same time, efforts are being made to develop and strengthen other Health Centers, with the aim of comprehensively upgrading primary care throughout Cyprus.

Special mention was also made of the need to improve access to preventive screening services for women in western Nicosia, as well as the request to create the necessary infrastructure to enable basic preventive screenings to be conducted in the area.

As Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides noted, among other things, in his speech: “Equal access to healthcare depends not only on whether a service is available, but also on how easily and promptly citizens can access it. Where one lives should not determine the quality of care one receives. The creation of modern and adequately staffed facilities outside urban centers is a key part of our effort to reduce geographic disparities. The Hatzigiannio Health Center is a prime example of this policy…”.

In his remarks, the Director of Primary Care at OKYPY, Mr. Konstantinos Hatzigiannis, noted: “The new Akaki Health Center is a modern, model facility for providing primary care services, which significantly enhances citizens’ access to high-quality and comprehensive care. With expanded services, staffed by specialized physicians, and equipped to perform diagnostic imaging and preventive screenings, the Center is designed to meet the essential needs of the local community…”.

Also present at this special event was the President of the Akakio Community Council, Ms. Eleni Georgopoulou, who emphasized that: “The first anniversary of the Hatzigiannis Health Center in Akaki marks an important milestone for us, but also serves as a starting point for achieving new goals, with the sole aim of providing the best possible service to the residents of the otherwise underserved western part of Nicosia. Our expectations—and our demands—are specific and substantial…”.

Having completed its first year of operation, the Hatzigiannis Health Center in Akaki is now moving on to the next stage of its development, with the goal of gradually expanding its services and providing even better care to residents of the wider region.

Strengthening primary health care and creating more opportunities for access to quality services close to where people live remain key priorities for OKYPY, with the Akakio Health Center playing a significant role in this effort.
