The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) held on Monday, October 19, 2026, the inauguration ceremony for the expansion and renovation of the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) at Nicosia General Hospital. The project, with a total investment of €4.1 million, was co-financed by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Plan, marking a significant step toward improving infrastructure and conditions for the provision of emergency care.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, emphasized the importance of upgrading public hospitals, noting that the project is part of a broader effort covering all districts. As he specifically stated, “citizens who need emergency medical services expect us to create all the necessary conditions so that we can respond quickly, with high quality, and in an appropriate environment.”

The upgrade creates a modern and functional environment that more effectively supports the work of healthcare professionals and improves conditions for receiving and caring for patients. In a setting where timely assessment, sound decision-making, and immediate response to incidents are of critical importance, appropriate infrastructure is a fundamental prerequisite for the Department’s effective operation.

Among the key improvements is the creation of a dedicated space for informing family members, so that their communication with the treating physicians takes place in an appropriate environment, while respecting their need for information and support. A rest area for staff was also created, recognizing the importance of appropriate working conditions for professionals who are on the front lines of emergency care every day.

The Chairman of the OKYPY Board of Directors, Mr. Marinos Kallis, highlighted the importance of the project for upgrading emergency care, noting that: “The expansion and upgrade of the Emergency Department at Nicosia General Hospital is not just about improving the physical infrastructure. It involves creating better conditions for providing care, enhancing the department’s operational efficiency, and improving both the patient experience and the working conditions of healthcare professionals.”

The upgraded infrastructure enhances the operation of the Pediatric Emergency Department within the context of a broader network of hospital services. The Department works in close collaboration with the Trauma Center, the Pediatric Emergency Department, the short-stay ward, and the rapid-transit clinic. This collaboration supports better case management, tailored to the severity and needs of each patient, and contributes to a more effective utilization of available services.

The completion of the project is particularly significant, as the work was carried out while the Emergency Department remained operational and continued to serve the public. During this period, the medical, nursing, and paramedical staff continued to meet patients’ needs under demanding conditions.

Referring to the conditions under which the work was carried out, the Director of TAEP, Dr. Savvas Savva, praised the staff’s efforts, emphasizing that even when the facility resembled a construction site, healthcare professionals continued to work with the goal of providing the best possible service to citizens, and he was quick to add that “Creating a modernized facility alone could not be the solution to all healthcare problems; what is essential is the human factor…”

OKYPY expresses its gratitude to the medical, nursing, paramedical, and other staff of TAEP for their professionalism, patience, and dedication throughout the project. Thanks are also extended to all those who contributed to the project’s implementation, including the relevant agencies, the consultants, the contractor, and the Organization’s Technical Services.

The completion of this project is part of OKYPY’s ongoing effort to modernize public hospitals and improve the quality of healthcare services provided. With a focus on people, the Organization continues to invest in modern infrastructure, the application of scientific knowledge, and the support of healthcare professionals, with the goal of providing safe, timely, and effective care.
