Nursing: A degree with a future in a field that needs you

The Republic of Cyprus's new plan provides financial support for education by strengthening the sector
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Nursing is a deeply human profession, yet at the same time demanding and scientifically complex. It requires clinical judgment, knowledge, technical skills, responsibility, and effective communication. Today, however, it also offers something else important to a young person choosing a field of study: clear career prospects in a sector where the need for qualified professionals is already great.

Cyprus Now Needs More Nurses

The demand for nurses in Cyprus is a pressing need for the Cypriot healthcare system. A recent study on nursing workforce planning identifies a shortage of at least 586 nurses: by 2025, the number of available nurses is estimated at 6,272, while the need is estimated at 6,858. Even by 2030, a shortage of 411 nurses is projected.

Behind the numbers are real people and real institutions: hospitals that need to staff their departments, health centers, community care services, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, and services that are expanding as the population ages and health needs become more complex. Government support is provided in response to this growing demand.

What the Annual Grant Program Provides

The Council of Ministers has approved an Annual Grant Program for undergraduate students in Nursing and Midwifery (regardless of income criteria), effective starting in the 2026–2027 academic year. The grant amount increases as students progress through their studies:

  • €1,000 for the first year of study
  • €1,250 for the second year of study
  • €1,500 for the third year of study
  • €2,000 for the fourth year of study

Graduates with a nursing degree will be required to work for two years in the nursing sector in Cyprus. Thus, financial support for their studies is directly linked to strengthening the Cypriot healthcare system. Interested applicants should consult the official announcement for the application process and final terms and conditions.

Nursing Studies at the European University of Cyprus

Through the Bachelor of Nursing program at the European University of Cyprus, students develop scientific knowledge, clinical and communication skills, critical thinking, and the ability to provide personalized care to people of all ages.

Clinical training is a fundamental part of the learning experience. That is precisely why nursing students at the European University of Cyprus are placed for clinical training in public and private hospitals and health centers, and complete approximately 3,000 hours of clinical training.

Upon graduation, students can register with the Cyprus Council of Nursing and Midwifery, following the prescribed procedures, and enter the profession or pursue graduate studies for further specialization.

A Degree with European Recognition and Professional Mobility

The Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the European University of Cyprus has been approved by the European Commission in accordance with the European Directive on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications among member states, allowing its graduates to work anywhere in the European Union.

A Choice That Pays Off

The Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at the European University of Cyprus combines three key elements: comprehensive university education, meaningful clinical experience, and career prospects in a field that Cyprus needs today and will continue to need in the years to come.
