With a focus on people and a particular emphasis on the areas of health and social contribution, the XM Group signed a partnership agreement on September 22 with the Karaiskakis Foundation to fund the creation of the new CellThera Laboratory by XM Cell Therapy Unit. The unit will be housed in a state-of-the-art, specially designed space within the Foundation’s existing facilities in Nicosia.
During the agreement signing ceremony, the Co-CEO of the XM Group, Dr. Stavri Morti, emphasized that the Group was delighted to fund such a promising scientific program, which will offer innovative treatments for patients. “This collaboration with the Karaiskakis Foundation,” Dr. Morti added, “aims to create a sustainable national platform for cell therapies, establishing the necessary infrastructure and capabilities for the implementation of cell therapies and their future availability to patients who need them.”
On behalf of the Karaiskakis Foundation, Executive Director Dr. Pavlos Kostaas warmly thanked the XM Group for its generous financial support toward the project’s implementation, and emphasized that the establishment of the new CellThera Laboratory by XM Cell Therapy Unit represents a significant step toward strengthening Cyprus’s scientific capacity in the field of advanced cell therapies, as well as for upgrading the country’s healthcare services: “Through its collaboration with the XM Group, the Karaiskakis Foundation is investing in specialized infrastructure, technology, scientific expertise, training, and quality systems required to introduce cell therapies in Cyprus. “Our vision is to create a sustainable platform that will make cell therapies accessible to patients in Cyprus.”
The new facility will include specialized laboratory infrastructure and automated closed-system technologies for cell processing and handling. Its operations will be designed in accordance with the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
The regulatory framework of Good Manufacturing Practice will ensure that cell processing and handling take place within a strictly controlled environment, adhering to high standards of quality, safety, and traceability. These specifications are essential for ensuring the quality of cellular products and, above all, patient safety.
The Unit will have the necessary capabilities for the processing, expand, characterize, and store cells, thereby creating the necessary conditions for the future introduction and application of cell therapies in Cyprus.
At the same time, it is expected to substantially strengthen the country’s specialized healthcare infrastructure and scientific capabilities in the field of advanced cell therapies, with the ultimate goal of expanding patients’ access to innovative treatment options.
The project is expected to be completed within 24 months.
