The Quality Assurance Unit of Nicosia General Hospital organized a workshop today, September 17, 2026, titled “Safe Care, for a Lifetime,” in observance of World Patient Safety Day, which is celebrated annually on September 17.
This year’s theme from the World Health Organization focuses on safe care for noncommunicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Patients with these conditions frequently interact with the healthcare system and receive multiple treatments, which increases the risk of preventable harm.
During the workshop, through presentations and discussions, topics were highlighted concerning communication and continuity of care, medication safety, infection prevention, and continuous quality improvement.
The workshop was part of Patient Safety Week activities. In this context, on September 11, 2026, a simulation exercise was held at the hospital to test staff preparedness.
Similar events and awareness-raising activities are organized by the Quality Assurance Units at other OKYPY hospitals.
For the State Health Services Organization, patient safety is a strategic priority. In September 2026, six hospitals received Accreditation Canada’s Platinum designation, bringing the total number of accredited hospitals within OKYPY to eight. This distinction confirms their compliance with strict international standards of quality and safety.
The Organization promotes a culture of safety through three pillars:
- Uniform and documented procedures.
- The network of Quality Assurance Units.
- Ongoing staff training.
OKYPY thanks everyone who participated in these initiatives and reaffirms its commitment to providing safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care to every patient.
