Today, Monday, July 20, 2026, Anty Bernam becomes Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade.
In his first speech after taking office, Andy Bernam called on the political world to respond with greater seriousness to new challenges, acknowledging that public trust in politics has declined.
Burnam noted that he is aware that “citizens are fed up with politics” and declared that politicians must “raise their game” and adapt to the demands of the new era.
“I want to be honest with you. We haven’t risen to the occasion, and we need to do better. And we will,” he said.

His key commitments include supporting young people in entering the workforce, strengthening mental health services, building more affordable housing, reducing social spending in a “fair and sustainable manner,” adhering to fiscal rules, and fulfilling the country’s commitments regarding defense spending.
“The country has not yet recovered from the mistakes of the 1980s”
In his speech, the new prime minister reiterated his view that the country had taken “the wrong path” in the 1980s and that the consequences of that period continue to be felt to this day.
He argued that many citizens feel their communities remain in decline and lack the means to change their course. For this reason, he said, his government will seek to change the way politics is conducted, placing greater emphasis on cooperation and problem-solving rather than on fruitless political confrontation.
At the same time, he pledged to move toward greater decentralization of power, transferring more authority to local communities, while announcing the creation of a new economic model in which essential goods and services will be subject to stronger public oversight to make them more affordable for citizens.
He will speak with Zelenskyy and reiterate his support for Ukraine
Bernham will speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, assuring him that the United Kingdom’s support for the war-torn country is “unwavering” and “resolute.”
The new prime minister said that Zelenskyy and Trump would be his “first calls” today.
“I will make it absolutely clear to President Zelenskyy later today that, as you know, nothing has changed. I will stand by him 100%, just as Keir Starmer did.”
He was tasked with forming a government by King Charles
Earlier, Burnam had officially assumed office as the 59th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after King Charles tasked him with forming the new government.
The process was completed during a private meeting at Buckingham Palace, where the monarch invited the Labour leader to form a government, shortly after Keir Starmer’s official resignation as prime minister.
