Turkey and Egypt have signed two letters of intent regarding military and defense cooperation.
According to announcements by the defense ministries of both countries and statements by Turkish officials, this cooperation is part of the gradual deepening of bilateral relations following their normalization.
The Egyptian defense minister’s visit to Ankara marked the establishment of new cooperation mechanisms between the two countries, focusing on both the armed forces and defense cooperation.
Turkey’s Minister of National Defense, Yasar Güler, and Egypt’s Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zaher, signed a letter of intent on military cooperation, as part of the Egyptian official’s official visit to Ankara.
At the same time, talks were held between high-level military delegations from the two countries, with the aim, according to an Egyptian statement, expanding cooperation between the armed forces in various areas.
Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening cooperation in the defense industry
. As part of the visit, Asraf Salem Zaher met with the president of the Turkish Defense Industry, Haluk Gorgun. The two sides signed a second letter of intent, which provides for the creation of a framework for cooperation on the development of defense capabilities and collaboration in the defense industry.
The strengthening of military ties follows theFramework Agreement on Military Cooperation signed during Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Egypt in February.
