Election offices were evacuated

An alarm was raised among U.S. federal authorities after several letters containing “suspicious substances” arrived at congressional offices and election offices.

Authorities are warning recipients to treat any such package as potentially dangerous, as the nature of the substances found has not yet been determined.

The Senate was also informed of the incident via a message from the official responsible for its security, according to reports by the Associated Press.

An FBI statement indicates that the relevant agencies “are investigating a series of suspicious letters sent to various addresses across the country, including the offices of the Secretary of State and relevant campaign offices.”

This development is causing serious concern, as it comes just three weeks before Election Day. At the same time, it brings back memories of similar incidents in 2023, when campaign offices in various parts of the U.S. received packages containing fentanyl, a particularly potent synthetic opioid.

Campaign offices in two states were evacuated

Concerns intensified this week when the delivery of packages containing a white substance led to the evacuation of election offices in Louisiana and Oklahoma.

At the same time, Ohio’s Secretary of State announced that the U.S. Postal Service had intercepted a package containing white powder that was addressed to his office. According to him, similar envelopes had also been sent to election officials in other states.

Concerns for the Safety of Workers

The National Association of State Secretaries and the National Association of State Election Directors, which issued a joint statement condemning the threats.

“Those entrusted with conducting our elections should never have to fear for their safety while performing their essential duties,” they stated.

The case is under investigation, with the relevant authorities urging recipients to exercise extreme caution and treat suspicious packages as potentially dangerous.
