An F-16 fighter jet crashed on Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. air base in Spangdahlem in the Eifel region of North Rhine-Westphalia-Westphalia, in Germany.
The news was reported by Southwestern German Radio and Television (SWR).
It is believed that the pilot used the ejection seat and survived; however, according to the news network n-tv, which cites the Bitburg-Prüm regional administration, at least one person has been injured.
Reports from local media indicate that two aircraft had taken off.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the aircraft suddenly lose altitude before a large plume of black smoke appeared near the runway.
The aircraft appears to have crashed at the end of the runway, where a golf course is located.
A large-scale rescue operation is currently underway at the scene. The local Trier Fire Department was called to the scene but, according to SWR, was subsequently withdrawn.
So far, neither the U.S. base nor the German authorities have issued any statements regarding the nature of the accident or any possible injuries.
