Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, called on the countries of the Persian Gulf to strengthen unity among Muslims and to “recognize their true enemy,” in a message released on Sunday via social media.
According to the Jerusalem Post, Khamenei’s statement was issued on the occasion of the anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth and included a call to the leaders of the Gulf states to “understand the plans for confronting” the common enemy, though he did not name it.
At the same time, the Iranian leader emphasized the need for “unity among Muslims” and for mutual support against their enemies, at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Iran’s supreme leader has not appeared in public for six months, since the first strikes launched by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, which killed his father and predecessor.
It is highly likely that Mojtaba was injured at the start of the attack, but his current condition is unknown. Messages like this are his only means of indirect communication with the Iranians and the international community.
