A man set himself on fire yesterday, Thursday afternoon, a short distance from the United Nations headquarters in New York and later succumbed to his injuries, the New York City Police Department reported.
The New York Police Department told Agence France-Presse that it received a phone call at 6:32 p.m. (local time; 01:32 Cyprus time) regarding the man’s self-immolation near the UN headquarters.
“He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital” in Manhattan, added the police, who are conducting an investigation.
They did not speculate on the motives behind the desperate act; however, according to a report in the tabloid *New York Post*, the man, dressed as a Tibetan monk, placed a Tibetan flag next to him before setting himself on fire.
When AFP contacted them for comment, the United Nations did not respond immediately.
