Beijing stated today that U.S. “sanctions and pressure” are not the solution, as the U.S. government stepped up pressure yesterday, Thursday, on its allies and China to join it in an effort to drastically increase economic strangulation, which it believes could lead to the “fall of the regime” in Tehran without a repeat of military operations.
“Sanctions and pressure will not resolve the problem,” said Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at a regular press conference. “China calls on all parties to take responsible measures and resolve the issue through political and diplomatic channels,” he added.
“China opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the United Nations Security Council,” he said.
China is an important strategic and economic partner for Iran.
More than 80% of Iranian oil exports were destined for China before the war, according to the analytics firm Kpler.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated yesterday that “any country that maintains relations with Tehran will hasten its economy’s path to oblivion.”
