U.S. President Donald Trump announced tonight that he is banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House “with immediate effect,” warning that other media outlets would follow and complaining about their news coverage.
In his post, Trump argues that the media should not be allowed to constantly publish fabrications and lies when covering the President of the United States, the Trump administration, or the United States.”
The two television networks, the news website, and the National Press Club did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
Trump has repeatedly urged television networks to cancel comedies or news programs that he does not like, that have made fun of him, or that have criticized his administration. He has also asked the Federal Communications Commission to revoke the licenses of television stations after criticizing their news coverage or other programs.
Recently, the 80-year-old President barred the Associated Press from the Oval Office because it refused to adopt the name “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico.
Today’s announcement, the consequences of which are not yet clear, comes at a politically difficult time for Donald Trump. His popularity has fallen due to the high cost of living and skyrocketing gas prices in the U.S. Americans are also criticizing his decision to go to war with Iran.
According to polls, the Republican Party risks losing control of one or even both houses of Congress in the midterm elections on November 3.
