Iran is considering a "blockade" of U.S. and Israeli ships in the Strait of Hormuz

The conditions set by Tehran

The Iranian parliament is currently reviewing the draft text of the agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz, which prohibits the passage of “ships from hostile countries,” such as the U.S. and Israel, from this waterway.

Countries and individuals who “have caused harm to Iran” will not be granted passage until compensation is paid, according to the state broadcaster IRIB.

The semi-official Iranian news agency Fars also confirmed the information, citing statements by a member of parliament.

“The bill in question provides for fines of up to 20% of the value of the ship’s cargo in the event of a violation of the proposed restrictions,” Fars adds.

Iran states that the agreement with Oman on reopening the Strait is close to being finalized.

The issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz is the biggest “sticking point” in efforts to end the conflict, with Iran and Oman currently negotiating to reach an agreement on transit.

According to the most recent proposal, Tehran could intervene—if deemed necessary—in incoming traffic, while outgoing traffic would follow a route between Iran and Oman, with exit permits to be granted via Oman after notifying Iran, as a senior Iranian official told Reuters this week.

Iran’s Conditions

Earlier, in an interview with the state news agency IRNA, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Garibabadi outlined Iran’s demands, stressing that the U.S. must reverse actions that, according to Tehran, violated previous commitments, according to CNNi.

These include:

An end to the naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The lifting of sanctions reimposed on Iran following the collapse of the ceasefire —particularly in the oil sector—and the resumption of negotiations regarding Tehran’s frozen assets.

Addressing the U.S. “failure” to ensure stability in Lebanon, as provided for in the memorandum of understanding signed with Washington in June.
