Chaos in Mexico as Hurricane Polo brings floods and power outages

Winds reached speeds of up to 175 km per hour

Hurricane Polo made landfall on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula on Tuesday, causing flooding and power outages.

The Category 3 storm is the latest in a period of intense activity, fueled by the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has caused unprecedented warming in the Pacific.

Hurricane Polo made landfall just south of Las Barrancas, a small fishing village in the state of Baja-California Sur on the western side of Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), warning of life-threatening winds and flash floods.

As Polo approached, strong winds churned up the sea, and waves from Puerto San Carlos, a fishing port with nearly 6,000 residents in Baja California Sur. The hurricane is generating winds of up to 175 km per hour.

Meteorologists have issued warnings regarding Polo for heavy rainfall and flooding in areas across 10 U.S. states, including Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado. Several of these states are facing drought conditions.

The head of Mexico’s meteorological service, Fabian Vázquez, stated that storm fronts and heavy rainfall could cause “very serious” damage. Approximately 169 shelters have been opened throughout Baja California Sur. The military has also deployed nearly 7,000 soldiers to the state.

In addition to Polo, meteorologists are also monitoring Tropical Storm Rachel, which is also approaching the Pacific off the coast of Mexico, which is expected to move parallel to the coast and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane by midweek.
