One protester dead in Paris, 1,200 arrests, 150 injured police officers, and a 17-year-old who was maimed in Saint-Étienne make up the toll so far from the violent protests that took place on Saturday in France, where widespread clashes, arson, and looting occurred.

According to BFMTV, the protester died in Paris of cardiac arrest after feeling unwell on Avenue Mazenta, where the march passed.

Citing a police source, the French network reported that other protesters carried him to the Château d’Eau first-aid station, but the man died in front of the facility. The Paris Police Department stated that “a person lost his life following a cardiopulmonary arrest.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced 1,200 arrests and 150 injured police officers, on the sidelines of the protests held over the cost of living and the deterioration of quality of life.

And while a 17-year-old was maimed in Saint-Étienne, the organizers and the CGT union put the number of protesters at 800,000, while the French Ministry of the Interior estimated the turnout at 550,000.

In Paris, which was at the center of the protests, approximately 110,000 people took part in the demonstrations, which were marked by serious clashes between police and groups of protesters.

The clashes occurred when groups of hooded individuals attacked police officers, stormed public buildings, and caused extensive damage in various parts of the country.

Serious Clashes at Place de la République

Serious clashes broke out in central Paris, centered on Place de la République, where protesters and police clashed for hours.

Police used tear gas in an attempt to contain the groups of rioters. For their part, some protesters attempted to approach government ministries and the presidential palace. An attack also took place at the headquarters of the Cnews television network.

The Limoges City Hall was set on fire, and hooded individuals stormed the Marseille City Hall

Among the most serious incidents was the arson attack on Limoges City Hall, where a fire, likely caused by a Molotov cocktail, caused extensive damage to the historic 19th-century building.

In Marseille, groups of hooded individuals broke into city hall by smashing the door and wrote slogans on the walls, while looting of stores was also reported in the city.

Attacks and acts of vandalism also occurred in other French cities.

In Lyon, the tourism office building was set on fire, and retail stores also sustained damage. In Lille, the city hall was vandalized, while in Grenoble, residents of a building were forced to evacuate after a fire broke out during the unrest.

A 17-year-old lost his arm to a grenade in Saint-Étienne

Among the most serious incidents of the day was the injury of a 17-year-old in Saint-Étienne, who lost his arm.

According to reports, the teenager was injured by a police stun grenade, which he reportedly grabbed with his hands.

According to Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, French authorities made 1,200 arrests on Saturday, while a total of 150 police officers and gendarmes were injured during the clashes. Earlier, reports had indicated that 60 police officers were injured, two of whom were in critical condition.

Political Clashes Over Responsibility, Mélenchon in the Crosshairs

The French prime minister made it clear that the government will not be intimidated by the riots, writing on X that “no one will impose their political agenda through violence.”

In the same vein, French President Emmanuel Macron pledged that those responsible for the destruction will be prosecuted and punished, directing his criticism at those who “are sowing chaos, who want nothing more than to attack our institutions, while at the same time preventing those who wish to demonstrate peacefully.”

For his part, the interior minister accused the far left of inciting violence, intensifying the political confrontation surrounding the clashes.

Saturday’s demonstrations took place with key demands including addressing the high cost of living, increasing funding for education, and improving public services.
