The toll so far from the devastating floods and mudslides and rockslides that struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet (southwestern China), with at least 165 people having lost their lives in both countries, while the number of missing exceeds 1,000.
In Nepal, the Ministry of Tourism announced that 468 tourists and travelers are missing, 24 hours after the disaster struck. “Among them are 393 foreigners and 75 Nepalese nationals,” said ministry spokesman Suraj Yimir.
In neighboring China, local authorities in Tibet —as reported by Chinese state television CCTV—announced that 558 people are missing following a severe landslide near a border outpost. Among those missing on the Chinese side are approximately 260 foreigners, though their nationalities have not yet been specified.
At least 34 Australian citizens are among the missing, as confirmed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The Australian prime minister emphasized the difficulty of gathering information due to limited infrastructure and resources in the affected region of Nepal, while expressing his solidarity with the families of the victims and those missing.
