U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, during a campaign rally, an executive order allowing anyone to purchase diesel fuel tax-free, provided it is intended for agricultural machinery or construction equipment used off-road, not private passenger cars or trucks.
At the rally in Nebraska, Trump said that the executive order “allows everyone to buy red diesel tax-free.” This type of fuel has enjoyed favorable tax treatment for years.
President Trump admitted that he doesn’t know much about red-dyed diesel. “I don’t know what it is, but it doesn’t matter—they say it’s very good,” he joked.
Gas prices have reached an all-time high in the U.S., mainly due to the war against Iran. Consumer discontent has become a liability for Republicans just a few weeks before the midterm elections.
