A theater of violent conflicts and albania

Last night, the courtyard of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Tirana became the scene of clashes between police and protesters.

Police officers were chasing protesters who had attacked them with rocks and Molotov cocktails and had entered the cathedral grounds to escape arrest. Scenes of violence ensued, with police officers beating and arresting them.

The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania reacted immediately to the situation after seeing footage of the events in the courtyard of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. In a statement, it expressed concern and called for respect for its places of worship.

“The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is a sacred place of prayer, a place where holy services are held and where the culture of peace is preached. The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania once again calls for a rejection of violence and the creation of space for dialogue,” the statement notably reads.

Yesterday, Monday afternoon, the Union of Albanian University Employees announced the organization of a solidarity march with the students. In a public appeal, the Union expressed its concern over police violence and emphasized that it has supported the student protest since it began six days ago.

The solidarity march was scheduled to take place today at 10:00 a.m. in the square in front of the Polytechnic University of Tirana under the slogan “Stop the violence against students.” The union is calling on citizens to participate, citing a political and human obligation to defend student life and to pave the way for dialogue.

Protesters in Tirana continue their daily demonstrations with a “barrage” of fireworks and Molotov cocktails against the police, who respond with water cannons and tear gas to disperse them.

Yesterday, Monday, students attacked the Tirana Court of Appeals, broke down the entrance, and set it on fire, causing widespread destruction.

Throughout the night, there was a heavy police presence in the Albanian capital.
