At least 56 people have lost their lives due to torrential rains and storms in northeastern India, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most densely populated state, the government’s disaster management agency reported on Sunday.
These deaths were recorded after “very heavy rainfall hit most of Uttar Pradesh,” according to a press release, which also mentions property damage: more than 1,000 homes were destroyed.
Uttar Pradesh, with a population of over 240 million, is frequently hit by storms during the monsoon season, from June through September.
However, this time, 66.5 millimeters of rain were recorded from Friday through Sunday, compared to a seasonal average of 7.6 millimeters.
The press release states, regarding this meteorological phenomenon, that “a barometric low over the Bay of Bengal moved inland and intensified rainfall throughout the region.”
