About 400 people gathered on Friday evening in the city of Carabajeda in La Guaira state and lit candles in memory of the victims of the double earthquake that struck VenezuelaVenezuela 100 days ago.
Volunteers handed out white candles at the site where a residential complex once stood, which was leveled by the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck 39 seconds apart.
“We will love you forever, my daughter,” read a message on the car belonging to the family of Franceslis Iriarte, a 16-year-old who was killed when the building collapsed right before her parents’ eyes as they were returning from the supermarket.

The young woman’s remains were found in the rubble after 29 days of searching.
Fielous Perdomo mourned the loss of her relatives: “It’s hard to tell yourself that ‘there’s nothing left but a small tree—it’s terrible,’” she said through her tears as she looked at the empty lot where the apartment building once stood.
More than 6,500 people lost their lives in the double earthquake on June 24 that caused massive destruction in northern Venezuela.
