A U.S. federal judge ordered Donald Trump’s administration to restore access for journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico to the White House, ruling that the decision to bar the three media outlets likely violates the Constitution.
The ruling is a significant blow to the U.S. president, as it concerns one of his administration’s most intense conflicts with the media. Judge Tim Kelly issued his ruling following an appeal by the three news organizations against the ban Trump had imposed on September 18.

The U.S. president had argued in a social media post that these media outlets “should not be allowed to constantly write or broadcast fabrications and lies,” accusing them of biased coverage of his administration’s actions.
For its part, the Department of Justice sought to defend the White House’s decision, arguing that the ban was related to national security concerns.
However, the judge ruled that the ban was likely incompatible with constitutional protections of freedom of the press and ordered that access be restored for journalists from the three media outlets to the White House.
