Syrian authorities announced on Friday (July 10) that preliminary investigations into the members of the cell accused of the bombings in Damascus revealed that they are linked to ISIS (Islamic State). This is the first official revelation regarding the identity of the organization allegedly behind the two attacks, which took place during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit.
The commander of Internal Security for the Damascus province, Brigadier General Ahmad al-Dalati, stated that initial interrogations of the core members involved in the attacks “indicated that they belong to the Islamic State.”
The announcement came a few hours after the Syrian Ministry of the Interior confirmed that all members of the cell had been arrested, following a large-scale and complex security operation carried out in coordination with the General Intelligence Directorate and security forces.
The operation included simultaneous raids in Damascus and its outskirts, targeting areas such as Katifa, Sayda Zainab, the suburb of Kunchaya, and As al-Warawar. According to the Syrian Ministry of the Interior, the operation led to the dismantling of the cell and the arrest of all its members.
On Tuesday (July 7), two explosions caused by improvised explosive devices occurred in central Damascus, near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during his visit to Syria.
One person was killed and dozens more were injured in the attacks. Syrian authorities have pledged to reveal the identities of the cell members, their roles, and their connections once the investigations are complete.
