Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was one of the most influential figures in Qatar’s modern history. He assumed power in 1995 and remained emir until 2013, when he carried out a voluntary transfer of power—a rare move in the region—to his son, the current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
During his 18-year reign, Qatar became one of the world’s strongest economies thanks to the exploitation of its vast natural gas reserves, while significantly strengthening its international influence in diplomacy, investment, and the media. At the same time, the foundations were laid for the “Qatar National Vision 2030” development plan, which aimed to diversify the economy and promote the country’s sustainable development.
So far, the Qatari authorities have not announced any further details regarding the cause of his death or the schedule of official mourning events.
