The parents of an Israeli hostage, who was murdered by Hamas just a few days before the third somber anniversary, are experiencing a “miracle.”
The parents of 25-year-old Almog Sarusi welcomed a baby boy via a surrogate mother, using eggs that had been frozen 25 years ago.
The baby was born on Yom Kippur, offering a message of hope amid the ongoing family tragedy caused by the loss of their son.
“Divine Intervention”
Little Lavi was born on Yom Kippur, just two weeks before the third anniversary of Israel’s darkest day, when Hamas terrorists abducted his 26-year-old brother from the Nova music festival.
Almog’s heartbroken and inconsolable parents, Nira and Yigal, welcomed their baby—a perfectly healthy little boy—into their lives, a moment they described as “a divine intervention.”
“It’s a true miracle,” Yigal told the New York Post, adding that “just as the life of his son Almog was brutally cut short, a new life can emerge in a miraculous way as proof that evil will not prevail.”
“It’s all from God,” said the 60-year-old father.
How They Decided to Have a Baby
The hope that the Sarousi family held onto for 331 agonizing days—that their “heroic” son would return home alive— was shattered when Hamas executed Almog and five other hostages, 11 months after their capture in a tunnel in Rafah in August 2024, just moments before IDF forces closed in to rescue them.
As they mourned their son—the eldest of their four children—the Sarousis recalled eggs that had been frozen about 25 years earlier as part of a medical procedure. So, with the blessing of their other children, they decided to proceed with the surrogacy process.
However, the couple kept this effort a secret. “We didn’t talk about it because we didn’t know if it would work,” Yigal said, noting that they had gone through several unsuccessful rounds of in vitro fertilization. “But this is 100% our child,” he emphasized.
“Between diaper changes and nighttime feedings, starting over at 58 and 60 isn’t easy, but it’s priceless,” say the overjoyed parents.
The name Lavi means “lion” in Hebrew, and that is exactly what this miracle child represents for the Sarousi family.
“He is the future of Israel,” said the 60-year-old father. “I want all of Israel to love this child,” said Yigal, who noted that little Lavi resembles his older brother.
