No one could have imagined that a routine ticket inspection on an ordinary regional train route in southwestern Germany would result in yet another incident that has shocked the country.
It all began when a 36-year-old passenger reportedly got into an argument with train staff during a ticket inspection. Tensions escalated quickly, and two security guards were called to the scene. Among them was a 26-year-old man who would find himself at the center of the tragedy.
According to prosecutors, the 36-year-old attacked the young security guard with punches and kicks. During the scuffle, a particularly hard blow knocked him to the floor. Then the unthinkable happened: the train door opened, and the 26-year-old was thrown from the train while it was traveling at approximately 120 kilometers per hour toward Karlsruhe.
His injuries were extremely severe. His condition remains critical, although doctors say it is stable.
The biggest question remains unanswered: how did the door open?
Initial investigations suggest that it may have been damaged earlier, when those involved repeatedly struck it during the altercation. However, no one had noticed the damage. A forensic expert is now examining the incident, seeking the exact cause of the door’s failure.
The case raises even more questions because the alleged perpetrator had previously been convicted of violent crimes and was out of prison on probation. Although he was provisionally arrested after the incident, the competent court did not order his pretrial detention, and he is currently at large.
