A Las Vegas court found former gang leader Dwayne “Keffe D” Davis guilty of the murder of legendary hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur, bringing an end to one of the most famous cases in music history.
Dwayne “Keffe D” Davis, 63, was charged in Clark County, Nevada, with murder with a firearm and had pleaded not guilty.
The 12 jurors unanimously found Davis guilty of first-degree murder with a firearm, a crime carrying a potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, after nearly three hours of deliberations.
Davis told the judge that he “intends to appeal.” After the proceedings concluded, several people in the courtroom burst into tears and embraced a prosecutor.
Davis was accused of leading a group of men who planned and carried out the murder of 25-year-old Tupac Shakur in retaliation for the beating of his nephew.
Shakur, one of the best-selling artists in the history of rap, was murdered in Las Vegas in 1996 while riding in a car with the co-founder of Death Row Records, Marion “Suge” Knight
Authorities had suspected Davis for years, but lacked sufficient evidence to press charges against him. However, in interviews and in a book he co-authored, he had admitted that he was in the white Cadillac from which the shots were fired and that he had supplied the weapon. He himself, however, has denied that he was the perpetrator who shot Sakour.
These statements played a significant role in the progression of the case, which had remained unsolved for years. In 2023, Las Vegas authorities arrested Davis and charged him with murder.
