At least six people have died and several others have been injured, according to the latest reports on the major fire that engulfed a high-rise building on Wednesday morning in Belgium.
The fire broke out in a ten-story residential complex in the Linkeroever district of Antwerp, with authorities deploying a large number of firefighters and rescue workers to the scene, where more than 200 people were living.
The latest update reports that rescuers have completed the evacuation of the building as well as an adjacent one.
The injured were transported to hospitals, while many others suffered minor injuries and received first aid at the scene.
Firefighters clarified that the fire broke out on the eighth floor of the building and not on the tenth, as initially reported. When the first crews arrived at the scene, they found that thick smoke had engulfed a large part of the building.
A shocking video captured the moment a man climbed from his balcony to a neighbor’s window to escape the thick black smoke.
