A 46-year-old man was executed yesterday, Wednesday, in Texas (south), the state prison system announced, marking the first execution in the U.S. since the unprecedented failure of Christa Pike’s execution, during which she survived despite being administered two injections of a lethal solution last week.
Jamal Howard, who had been sentenced to death for murder, became the 30th person to be executed in the country since the beginning of the year.
Christa Pike, the death row inmate who survived two lethal injections in the United States, was about to be taken off life support at the hospital when she regained consciousness, one of her attorneys said.
“On Monday night, we thought Krista was brain dead and that the machines keeping her alive would be turned off the next day. However, on Tuesday, to everyone’s surprise—including myself, her legal team, and the medical team—Krista woke up and began to speak,” said attorney Randy Spivey at the end of a hearing before a Tennessee court in the southern U.S.
