Severe storms and two tornadoes caused widespread damage overnight in parts of Germany, resulting in at least one fatality and several injuries, while dozens of buildings were damaged, authorities announced today.

More severe storms may follow, particularly in the southern states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned.

In Waldorf, in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a 58-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her and a 47-year-old woman was seriously injured, police announced.

The two women were walking together when the storm approached and sought shelter in a covered area. However, a nearby tree was uprooted by the storm and fell onto their shelter, injuring both women. The 58-year-old died at the scene, while the 47-year-old was taken to the hospital.

Elsewhere in Rhineland-Palatinate, the storm toppled trees and even house walls, while falling debris from building facades and debris swept up by the wind caused further damage.

A tornado struck Firstenwalde-Spree in Brandenburg, the state surrounding Berlin, the DWD confirmed.

The tornado is also visible in videos posted on social media.

Police in Potsdam announced that the storm caused damage in the area, including to cars that were struck by falling trees. No injuries were reported.

Trees were uprooted, and at least one building lost its roof. A photo shows a tree trunk protruding from the kitchen ceiling of a home.

A second tornado struck the area around the town of Wetzlar in the central state of Hesse yesterday, Wednesday evening, the DWD confirmed. The meteorological service announced that it has not yet completed its assessment of the tornado’s intensity.

According to the fire department, approximately 60 homes were damaged in Wetzlar. The damage ranges from roof tiles being torn off to entire roofs being ripped away—some of which were carried by the winds as far as 100 meters away.

In neighboring Laubach, a fallen tree caused damage to a gas tank at a residential building. The surrounding area was evacuated within a 200-meter radius as gas began to leak.

Similar damage was reported in the states of Thuringia and Bavaria, where some homes are now uninhabitable.
